Pavo is located east of Ara, west of Indus and north of Octans and was first descibed by Johann Bayer.
In mythology, the Peacock received the beautiful tail feathers with their "eyes" from the Argus, a creature with a hundred eyes, when the creature was lulled to sleep and slain by Mercury.
Pavo is the 44th largest constellation covering 378 square degrees and is the 37th brightest. Pavo reaches opposition on July 19.
